Madrid Protects Iberia from Catalan Competition

Madrid run Spanish airport monopoly Aena is desperately protecting Madrid based Iberia from the growing threat of the new terminal at Barcelona airport (Search Ryanair to Expel Iberia from Barcelona). The centralist bureaucracy is boycotting Catalan airline Vueling from starting operations at the new terminal. Vueling is Iberia’s biggest competitor for the lucrative shuttle Barcelona-Madrid, the densest air route in Europe. Former monopoly Iberia is still not ready to move to the new terminal and fears doubling its loss of passengers. Vueling now has 25% of the shuttle market. Protectionism doesn’t work: Aena unintentionally is favouring another Catalan airline, Spanair, and the competing Frankfurt and Zurich long distance hubs to Madrid.

Vueling has opened another front with AENA to accelerate their move to the new terminal this summer. They do not want to be forced to wait until  September, as the Madrid organ demands to coincide with Iberia’s move. This imposition by AENA leaves Spanair and the Star Alliance group which includes Lufthansa and Swiss free to exploit alone the new T-1 all summer long, the best season for flying. The president of Vueling Josep Pique insists on disembarking right now in the new infrastructure: “We trust this can be made possible, but the decision lies in AENA’s hands.” The public monopoly’s excuse is that a Vueling move now to the T-1 will result in a tough operational test for the infrastructure, in use only since 17 June without any incidence of note. Vueling suspects favouritism with Spanair, with their successful media blitz thanks to their debut in the T-1. Spanair, recently acquired by a group of Catalan companies and institutions, and Vueling, now traffic leader at the airport, want both to become the locomotive of Barcelona Airport.

El monopoli madrileny dels aeroports espanyols Aena protegeix a la desesperada Iberia, basada també a Madrid, de la creixent amenaça per la nova terminal a l’aeroport de Barcelona (Veure search Ryanair expulsarà Iberia de Barcelona). La burocràcia centralista boicoteja l’aerolínia catalana Vueling d’iniciar operacions a la nova terminal. Vueling és la competència més gran que té Iberia pel rendible pont aeri Barcelona-Madrid, la ruta aèria més densa d’Europa. L’antic monopoli Iberia encara no està preparat per canviar a la nova terminal i tem doblar la seva pèrdua de passatgers. Vueling ja controla el 25% del mercat del pont aeri. El protectionisme no funciona: Aena sense voler està afavorint una altra aerolínia catalana, Spanair, i els hubs competidors amb Madrid de llarg recorregut Frankfurt i Zurich.

Vueling ha obert un nou front amb AENA perquè acceleri el seu trasllat a la nova terminal aquest mateix estiu. No vol esperar a setembre, tal com vol l’orgàn madrileny que exigeix que coincideixi amb el trallat d’Iberia. Aquesta imposició d’AENA deixa que Spanair i el grup Star Alliance que inclou Lufthansa i Swiss, explotin la nova T-1 en solitari durant tot l’estiu, la millor temporada aeronàutica. El president de Vueling Josep Piqué insisteix en desembarcar ja ara a la nova infraestructura: “Nosaltres confiem en que sigui possible, però la decissió està en mans d’AENA.” El monopoli públic s’excusa en que traslladar ara Vueling a la T-1 suposarà una dura prova per a l’operativitat de l’infraestructura, que només funciona des del 17 de juny sense cap incidència destacable. Vueling sospita d’un tracte de favor a Spanair, que ha aconseguit una àmplia exposició mediàtica a l’erigir-se en debutant de la T-1. Spanair, comprada fa poc per un grup d’empreses i institucions catalanes, i Vueling, que ara lidera el tràffic de l’aeroport, volen les dues convertir-se en la locomotora de l’aeroport de Barcelona.
