Cameron Joins the Euro/CAMERON ENTRA A L’EURO

Cameron Joins the Euro

The Cameron bulldog needs the euro more than Europe needs Britain. Below: Greece, the song & dance crisis musical starring Olivia Newton-Merkel and John Sarkolta.

Sarkozy memorably told Cameron to shut up: “We are sick of you criticising us and telling us what to do. You say you hate the euro, and now you want to interfere in our meetings.” Cameron wants to stay outside the eurozone, while maintaining a big-power say on what happens inside. As Sarkozy implied, this is ignoble and dishonest. The days of sitting on the fence, of having cake and eating it, are coming to an end. The only sensible outcome is Britain’s entry into the Euro (Search The Pound Is Not Yet the Drachma).

A Cameron veto will trigger an eurozone treaty to which Britain would not be party. The two-speed Europe would be the reality. Tory Eurosceptics voice considerations of national sovereignty and national interest and that London would be damaged as a financial centre. In fact one prejudice unites them –xenophobic Little Englandism masquerading as the high principle of national sovereignty. Their demands contain one fatal flaw. Two-speed Europe threatens London’s primacy as a financial centre even more. So who is acting against the national interest? Instead of relegation to second division Cameron should embrace the only logical solution: Britain’s belated entry into the euro. If Britain had been in from the start, the euro would have been better policed. Greece, for one, might not have been admitted. Britain’s entry would, at a stroke, bring financial stability. London would enhance its position as Europe’s financial centre. Gordon Brown’s incompetence means the pound has devalued 30% against the euro, so Cameron can boast Labour’s requirements have been met. Like Nixon who went to China and Sharon who took Israel out of Gaza, Cameron can make Britain European.
