Pla Blames the Crisis on the Rich/PLA CULPA ELS RICS DE LA CRISI

Pla Blames the Crisis on the Rich

by Josep C. Verges

The Carullas of Gallina Blanca, founders of Omnium Cultural, accused of evading at least € 160 million to Switzerland. Below: The head of the clan, Jordi Carulla, leaves court as a criminal defendant. Omnium Cultural celebrated 50 years without apologizing for the lies against Josep Pla. The rich tax evaders no longer have to maintain the foundation that we taxpayers, who do pay taxes, subisdise to the tune of 70%.

Fascist censorship banned any mention of Catalonia, the economy or even international affairs. Travelling to Israel in 1957 Josep Pla wrote in praise of the new country but my father Josep Verges Matas warned him that anti-Semitic Franco was getting nervous: “The Middle East pieces are fine but Censorship keeps demanding when they will end. Luckily we have almost finished.” The difficulty of writing when nothing could be said is illustrated by the Destino publisher’s letter of 1955: “Maybe next week you should accentuate the countryside in the letter from Italy. I know that the letter about the Baroque exasperated them.” Josep Pla had to stick to the Roman landscape because direct criticism such as “The Critical Current Against the Baroque” was abhorred by the regime. They did not want any criticism of the 18C, lest Catalans were reminded of their military occupation on 11th September 1714!

The greatness of Josep Pla is shown by how he managed to say what he wanted about Jews, the Baroque or the crisis. In the summer of 1947 my father wrote him rather worried: “I received the two pieces. The article on the the economy I tell you right now will not see the light of day because we must inevitably submit it to Censorship and everything will be cut. This week’s article was not taken to the censor and I think we will be punished.” Josep Pla was too clever with words and the publisher of Destino wrote a few days later: “Good news. Your article on prices and wages which had been banned has now been authorized and comes out this week with very few alterations, practically the same ones Vicens Vives and Ortinez pointed out.” A note of clarification: my father gave to read controversial articles before sending them to the Fascist Censorship. How does Pla get away with it in “I Find Everything So Cheap”? He discusses the terrible economic crisis by blaming the stupid and irresponsible rich -those manufacturers, so Catalan in word only, who founded Omnium Cultural, for example: “I have never seen among what one might call the upper echelons of present times the slightest grimace of disgust at the price of anything, however outrageous, over-the-top or excessive it may be. On the contrary the rising cost of anything is considered a perfectly natural phenomenon. They won’t run out of cash in the wallets inside their jackets. They are madly elated and feel perfectly at ease when they can say that some grotesque object has cost then a fabulous amount of money. Culture and civility should serve, if not for the common good -that would be asking too much- but at least for their personal self-interest. In our latitudes conservatives do not even know how to conserve. The rich undermine their own positions, play against their own specific interests and speculate against themselves while the rest of the population are daily more impoverished. Conservatives do nothing but play about with their immense mental stupidity.” Fascist censorship is dead, but Josep Pla is still being censored by the heirs of the industrialists enriched by the regime who will not forgive their being ridiculed for their sordid exhibitionism of luxury while the country went hungry. When, years later, Josep Pla rejected their attempt to whitewash their Catalan credentials by publishing his Complete Works, Omnium Cultural tried to destroy him with lies. Nothing has changed when celebrating 50 years of Omnium Cultural with all the subsidized pomp, while Josep Pla does not exist because he criticized the rich but shortsighted bourgeoisie that founded it. Today he would continue to criticise as acutely as always the public officials -there are no entrepreneurs left-with their excessive celebrations in the middle of the crisis, paid for, the party and and the crisis, out of our empty pockets.
