What Aung San Suu Kyi Didn’t See/EL QUE NO HA VIST AUNG SAN SUU KYI

What Aung San Suu Kyi Didn’t See

by Josep C. Verges

Aung San Suu Kyi with her beloved husband Michael Aris who died of cancer in 1999 without being able to see her again, refused entry into Burma. Below: Reunited with her youngest son Kim in 2010. Her eldest Alexander lives in Oxford.

The new conscience of the world Aung San Suu Kyi visited Europe for her second trip to the free world in 24 years, after Thailand. She had been in prison and house arrest for 22 years for winning the elections in 1990 and now she has won again elections on the road to democracy. Some major players were missing in her tour of the rule fo law and freedom.

First stop Geneva to thank the ILO for their fight against slavery and child labour in Burma. But she didn’t see the Red Cross, also Geneva based, too cozy with the military dictatorship.

Second stop Bern to visit a citizen parliament which sits part time with part time politicians. But she didn’t see Berlin with its heavy handed leadership of Europe with professional politicians.

Third stop Oslo to collect the Nobel Peace Prize she had been barred from. But she didn’t see President Obama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize without having governed.

Fourth stop Dublin, welcomed by Irish musicians who sang her cause. The Burmese are known as the Irish of Asia, for their fight against the English, their heavy drinking and their superstition. But she didn’t see any Hollywood stars, little interested in freedom.

Fifth stop Oxford, her university and home for 24 years. But she didn’t see any Ivy League colleges, little interested in the rule of law.

Sixth stop, for now, London, to address the Mother of Parliaments, but she did not see Washington. America is no longer seen in the world as a beacon of freedom. Certainly she would have been welcomed by Reagan or FDR, to name two giants for freedom, but today’s pygmy White House has lost its moral compass.

  1. Whenever Suu Kyi opens the sunroof of her SUV, stands up and graciously greets the people, they reach out to her or hold up their small children. Some in the crowd chant her name and run after the convoy until they eventually stop out of sheer exhaustion or even collapse in the street.
