Ali Baba’s Catalan Cave/ALÍ DURAN I BABÀ PUJOL

Ali Baba’s Catalan Cave

Pujol and sons wallow in the Catalan Treasury while bald vulture Duran throws his evil shadow from his hideout in Chile. Below: Pujol and Duran blinded by Spanish justice.

Ali Baba’s cave has nothing to envy the Government of Catalonia in the hands of Jordi Pujol sr and Duran, two sides of the same coin it seems. Let’s start with the bald-faced head of Duran and end with tails, if not the same bald-face, of Jordi Pujol sr after the disgraceful Third World sentence in the Pallerols or Employment Case, the latest corruption trial of all Duran’s men, and women.

But first my thanks to Josep Callol and Eduard Cid who uncovered their large scale corruption. Callol wrote in Diari de Girona (12 January): “One day 16 years ago a colleague and friend came to see me at the Diari de Girona offices and told me that he had explosive news. We had just begun to look into the chaos that existed at the Employment Ministry and Eduard Cid had in his hands a major exclusive that opened the can of worms of the Employment Case. The dedicated journalist and radio presenter had found the first two witnesses of the affair. They had detected the forgery of their signatures while operating an ATM. Thanks to him, many of the stories that have been exposed over the past 16 years have been published in black and white.” I will add that in my book All Duran’s Men, the Political Corruption of Catalonia, of which the Supreme Court has not touched a single comma, I write in the introduction: “Callol of Diari de Girona deserves a Pulitzer, but we don’t not have them and the Cross of St. George is very devalued.” When I denounced Christian Democrat corruption to the anti-corruption prosecutor, at Duran’s personal request, the corrupt presumed innocent was interviewed by the famous radio preacher Gemma Nierga, as I explain at the end of my book: “Duran gets into difficulties all on his own. It was all the fault of everyone else, but he promised that if a single euro was found to have been taken, he would be the one to answer. Gemma naturally wants to know if he will resign. The Christian leader, increasingly nervous, says that first it must be proven and then those responsible will resign. Digging himself deeper into the hole he reels off a convoluted liar’s tale, very hurt by a person who makes the rounds of the radios with a press folder. -Do you mean Mr. Verges? Gemma asks. -I do not want to speak about this person -he screams out of control- that you journalists believe more a person who has no public office and no proof! –Are you criticizing my work, Mr. Duran? Last week Mr. Verges was here in my programme. -Journalists must be scolded for not doing proper work! -Mr. Duran please do not get up from your chair and threaten me with your arms flailing about! Duran sits down and for five minutes he talks about his light nationalism and his succession (-I’m young). The mellow voice of the professional politician of the oasis is back, but the first 20 minutes were Nixonian.” Duran has taken refuge in Chile until the storm passes of the criminal conspiracy, still blaming others and proving that he lied when he promised to resign if the courts found that the Christian Democrats had stolen money from the unemployed. All parties, from Esquerra to Cup, demand his resignation. In contrast Pujol, pigging in his own dunghill with his large family, all now multimillionaires, defended irresponsibly Duran, congratulating him for not having resigned after the conviction for corruption: “If every time a party has a problem the president must resign, from Felipe Gonzalez to Aznar there would be a merry-go-round of presidents. I’ve never doubted of his political and personal qualities. I have full confidence in him.” Pujol phoned him in Chile to give his full hearted support: “You can count on me, but I am not sure that I can not do anything.” The president of Catalonia for 23 years defends that the party of his partner stole from the unemployed and from Catalan and European taxpayers. In the CiU cave Ali Duran and Baba Pujol don’t need to keep their word or have any political responsibility.
