Cameron Censures Spain on Catalonia

cameron rajoy_html_40aaef7aA conservative democrat and a conservative authoritarian don’t agree on the people’s right to choose. Below: Cameron offers the juicy apple of democracy to the Scots while Rajoy threatens Catalans in front of a Spanish nationalist balloon.

David Cameron was asked in a press conference about Scotland’s independence referendum. Nobody had made any reference to Catalonia or Spain, but Cameron referred to the Catalan demand for an independence referendum: “I don’t believe that, in the end, it’s right to try to ignore these questions of nationality, independence, identity. I think it’s right to make your arguments, take them on and then you let the people decide. But that’s the way I want to do things in the UK. I would never presume to tell people in Spain how to meet these challenges themselves; it’s a matter for the Spanish Government and the Spanish Prime Minister.”

David Cameron’s words in support of the Catalan right to independence is a turning point. Civilized Europe wants territorial disputes resolved by voters and will force Spain to negotiate. If Cameron wants a vote on Catalan independence he obviouylsy won’t reject it when declared. The machinations of Federico Trillo (who boasted to be the sole political ambassador appointed by the PP) had the opposite effect. The British government has refused to make a ‘united front’ against Scotland and Catalonia that Madrid proposed. Diplomacy is also an art based on tradition and ‘The Case of the Catalans’ is still alive. It is no coincidence that the oldest allies of England are Portugal and Catalonia since the War of Spanish Succession. England betrayed Catalonia in the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713, but today perhaps it wont again. ‘Cameron’s words are not applicable for Spain’ replied foreign minister Margallo. How curious that Cameron himself raised the question without anyone asking him directly about the undemocratic attitude and refusal to megotiate of the Spanish government. The prime minister has lost patience with Spain.

  1. Yes but Cameron has been told that voters on Scotland will vote to stay in UK and not become independent while Castilia knows that Catalunya would vote for independence and was the equal of Castile in the past. I think that Cameron is right about self- determination but it is easy for him. Castilians do not have it so easy. The British awkward problems are Malvinas, Gibraltar, Northern Ireland, where Britain should disconnect but the locals votes are to stay with UK. So self-determination is two-edged.
