Bad Soldiers of Salamis/SOLDATS DE MALA MENA

Bad Soldiers of Salamis

by Josep C. Verges

Javier-CercasJavier Cercas in Girona. In Catalonia since four, he only speaks Catalan in the alcove like Aznar. Below: Ibahernando in Estremadura, a village of 472 inhabitants where Javier Cercas and first cousin Alejandro Cercas, socialist MEP, were born.

Javier Cercas, born in Estremadura as he never forgets to say, educated in Girona and living in Barcelona, is famous for “Soldiers of Salamis, a novel about the Civil War in Catalonia where the Fascist main character saves civilization thanks to a Republican anti-hero. Civilization is again in danger in Catalonia so Cercas has enlisted as volunteer with the bad soldiers of Salamis.

Bad soldiers because on 14 August the Italian L’Espresso published a long walk through Barcelona of the journalist Wlodek Goldkorn with the idolized Javier Cercas: «I was born in Estremadura, the son of a veterinarian. I have lived in Catalonia since I was four. My live-in girlfriend is pure Barcelonese and I speak Catalan to her. For me this is the language of my intimacy, the language of love.” I readily believe this is true despite “lo scritore spagnolo” a month later denying in Girona: My alleged statements,”A murderous Utopia” referring to Catalan sovereignty. I doubt that there is a single reader who thinks I’ve said such a barbarity. What I have written often is that in Europe we have created far too many murderous Utopias, often under the ideological umbrella of nationalism. It has never crossed my mind to state that Catalan nationalism or sovereignty or independence is one of those Utopias. I admit that the L’Espresso journalist, as I checked in disbelief, makes me say this and other similar nonsense, such as that Spanish-language writers who live in Catalonia are persecuted. Obviously there are always journalists who make one say what they want you to say.” Aznar also presumed to speak Catalan in the alcove, but I find Cercas more credible in romantic intimacy than the Spanish nationalist with a Hitler, or if you prefer a Charlie Chaplin mustache, whispering“I love you” to his bottle (wife Botella). Cercas waited one month to deny his anti-Catalan barbarities , his own words, in L’Espresso. The journalist gives a curious answer: “The next time we’ll talk in Englishuntil then all my solidarity to Cercas and all those who are opposed to Catalan nationalism (WG)“. Evidently the L’Espresso journalist believes Cercas to be so scared that he now denies what he really said. No problem, in future they’ll speak English because his Estremadura Spanish is understood the wrong way round by Italians. Catalan nationalists are not murderers and Spanish is not persecuted in Catalonia. These Italian barbarities have had a great impact in the Spanish nationalist capital Madrid so that the Jacobin El Pais has been led to publish the Cercas Catalan denial…in Catalan! As if it were the fault of the Catalan media that they quoted the bestialities that Cercas now says he did not say in Italy. What a contrast, when the Spanish government of the PP banned the presentation in Dutch of the novel Victus, about the Franco-Castilian military occupation of Catalonia in 1714, virtually nothing was published in Madrid against the anti-Catalan persecution of Albert Sanchez Piñol. Indeed Cercas promised an article, which either was rejected in Madrid, or he was too lazy to write in defense of Catalonia. Just as he was too lazy to deny the l’Espresso article until a month late, a denial disbelieved even by the journalist who did the interview. Spanish nationalists have really bad soldiers to save civilization.

Primera foto: Javier Cercas a Girona.
