Zero Rajoy v. the Astute Mas/ZERO RAJOY CONTRA L’ASTUT MAS

Zero Rajoy v. the Astute Mas

by Josep C. Verges

Rajoy CamachoRajoy and local leader Sanchez Camacho wave goodbye to Catalonia. Only 300 PP apparatchiks attended his Barcelona diatribe. Below: Standing ovation by 3,000 to the roadmap for independence in 18 months as President Mas shakes hands with Esquerra leader Junqueras.

Zero Rajoy came for the day to Barcelona, exclusively to talk to PP members. He was too scared to meet the Astute Mas -who had invited him to the presidential palace- and he was even more terrified of facing the Catalan people. He did not even dare defend his denialist policies in front of business leaders. In short a political coward. While the Astute Mas gathered a huge and varied audience for his roadmap to a quite possible future, Zero Rajoy bunkered down in the unmovable past in front of his party of inoperative bureaucrats. Today the PP has been reduced to only a miserable 1% in direct voter support in Catalonia!!! Maybe he took the Shanghai Express to revolutionary Barcelona to promote his Spanish nationalism with no future seats in the Catalan Parliament.

Zero Rajoy continues to fail with his zero in maths. Since he only has 1% support left in Catalonia, now he only wants to count those that do not vote, but in a democracy elections and policies are won through a vote, never by not voting. The despot Franco did not permit a vote and he also presumed to speak for all those who did not vote. Nowadays Zero Rajoy, and likewise the Astute Mas, have to win elections. All he had to say was that he had nothing to say. It seems Catalans must be ever so grateful because the central State invests in Catalonia less than half what we pay in taxes. The three main English parties have agreed to transfer to Scotland the income tax and fiscal freedom. Zero Rajoy on the contrary says that Catalans are not allowed to complain that his centralist State returns just a small part of what we pay. Under no circumstances can we manage our own taxes like the Basques do and the Scots will! Zero Rajoy thinks everyone is wrong except himself. The Astute Mas is going nowhere and millions of Catalans will continue unable to vote, if the courts follow his orders. It was the speechifying of a property manager, written in his own hand, with all the frigid pride of the ignorant parrot who belittles what he does not know, especially democracy. Are Cameron, Clegg and Miliband wrong for holding a referendum in Scotland and offering a fiscal pact? Is Canada wrong to hold not one but two referendums on the independence of Quebec? Are all the new countries in Europe wrong? Only Putin understands Zero Rajoy, both equally afraid of the people and equally surrounded by corruption. Zero Rajoy denies everything, including reality, because Spain is the central State and the people have to be silenced. An entire speech behind closed doors in front of the defunct PP of Catalonia, in defunct Castilian, which he calls Spanish, a language which does not exist in the Spanish Constitution but makes him sound more Spanish nationalist. In Switzerland, where I live half the time, the federal government speaks in the local language. No Swiss German minister would ever dream of speaking German in Geneva or one from Lausanne, French in Zurich. They would look ridiculous as well as uncouth. But Zero Rajoy never looks ridiculous, not even with the last three treasurers of the PP indicted for corruption, not even with the resignation of his minister Ana Mato for corruption on the same day he presented an anti-corruption plan, and not even when he belittles the millions of Catalans who voted in freedom. George Orwell did not discuss Catalonia here but a Scottish nationalist who wrote to him in 1947: “Please don’t refer to us as Britons. There is no such race. We are Scots and that’s good enough for us. The English changed their name to British but even if a criminal changes his name he can be known by his fingerprints. Scotland experienced her Yalta in 1707, but we will never accept defeat. After more than 200 years we are still fighting for our country and will never acknowledge defeat whatever the odds.” Orwell warned: “It is a small movement but it could grow because there is a basis for it. Scotland has a case against England. In some areas at any rate Scotland is almost an occupied country. I am speaking from limited experience but I should say that this is beginning to cause resentment. If people feel that they have a special culture which ought to be preserved, and that the language is part of it, difficulties should not be put in their way. It is probable that the effort of being bilingual is a valuable education in itself. They benefit intellectually by having to be aware. as their English opposite numbers would not be.” The great author of Homage to Catalonia defined himself: “I was not a rebel except by force of circumstances.” The same as the Astute Mas and all Catalans who want to vote despite the innumerate Zero Rajoy.
