  1. Lufthansa decidedly has an embarrassment. Obviously the young man had serious psychic problems, and he had a chit excusing him from duty on that day which he tore up. It’s clearly all too easy to say that his superiors should not have allowed him to fly, but that is what Lufthansa is going to have to hear. It was foolish also for their spokesman to declare so early on that he was perfectly fit to fly. He probably would give a lot to make that unsaid again. But I feel with exponentially increasing conviction that we should avoid “the German disease” of trying to blame everyone except the actual culprit. It would appear to be an over-reaction to the obviously very massive recriminations after WW2. Don’t blame Hitler, blame those who didn’t stop him. A provincial governor causes en enormous national financial crisis by his crazy and irresponsible actions, and the currently heated discussions don’t even mention that, they just want to know whom they can blame for not having stopped him. If you are raped, it’s your fault. If you are robbed, you are yourself to blame for not looking after your possessions better (that opinion I first heard from the damages adjuster of Lufthansa, as it happens). If a pathological mass murderer decides to commit such a horrible crime, firstly it is probably impossible to prevent him, and secondly it’s his fault and nobody else’s. Did you also go through the phase where a long wave of destructive crimes, murder of bankers, burning of cars etc etc, was blamed not on the culprits but on a nebulous concept called “society”? One thing one must however concede. We should all of us make a bit more effort to avoid anyone’s feeling that, if one wants to kill oneself, it doesn’t matter to kill 149 other people who are entirely innocent. Could that have something to do with violent films ???? Or have we got it from countries traditionally more savage than ours, for whom the perpetrators of “nine-eleven” are national heroes? I mourn the loss of two excellent singers of the Düsseldorf opera, one of whom had her husband and baby on board too. You’re quite right, John. Aleatory death, could happen to any of us. 2. A very disturbing, in addition to very sad, incident. It poses all sorts of questions one of which is how Lufthansa could have known about the copilot’s medical condition when under German law it’s a criminal offence for doctors to inform their patient’s employers about their patient’s condition. In my opinion it’s one more example, and a very tragic one, of the failure of “developed” societies to find a sensible balance between an individual’s rights and an individual’s obligations.
