Aznar’s War and Almunia’s Peace

Aznar is very upset with the democracies because they speak openly of Spain as a failed state. Romney was first and then Obama, and Merkel also never tires of repeating that Spain is a failed state economically. Why are Spanish nationalists so obsessed about Catalonia when the first thing they should be doing is fixing the economy? The only Spanish politician with some sense lives in Brussels and I have called for years for Joaquin Almunia to lead the PSOE. It would not now be a party in steep decline. The vice-president of the European Commission believes that the English have given a lesson in democracy to Spain with the agreement to hold the 2014 Scottish referendum on independence.

 

“Tonight two Spanish fighter planes flew with a lot of noise over our roof. They want to scare us, as if that will change our vote!” It is raining cats and dogs and we cannot harvest our olives so we have gone shopping in Tortosa. The owner of the lovingly set up shop is talking to an old lady and to my Swiss wife Regula, very angry that the military are already preparing the occupation of Catalonia by practicing the bombing of unarmed civilians. Spanish nationalist politicians want to prevent by whatever means a Catalan vote for independence. Curious election campaign for Parliament on 25 November by the PP in Catalonia, based on naked threats. Rajoy does it with irony (so to speak), but his boss Aznar has already declared war on Catalonia: “Catalonia cannot remain united unless it stays in Spain. Breaking the Spanish Constitution is the way out of Europe. The problem is not only with Spain, but with the rule of law. We must reform our system to prevent blackmail, impositions and exclusion manoeuvres. The historical continuity of Spain depends on us. Nothing further from the truth than the supposed historical failure of Spain.” Aznar wants to prevent Catalonia from voting and for this he now wants changes in the Constitution which he had always said was untouchable. In fact he is now admitting that the current Constitution, contrary to what the PP says, allows Catalonia to vote for independence. Aznar in addition talks like a racist inventing two races in Catalonia, Catalan-speakers and Spanish-speakers. Catalonia is one people, bilingual, who vote for Catalan parties, which opinion polls for the parliamentary election show with an overwhelming 90% of MPs. What a contrast with Almunia: “It is dishonest to roundly proclaim that Catalonia would be out of the European Union if it became independent. We are all European citizens and once an European citizen you have certain rights. You cannot give a categorical answer stating that if a country separates they are out and we shall never know anything more about them until the end of time. Not so. When a debate arises like the one in Catalonia, Flanders or Scotland things should be considered calmly, without leaving anything out. Here, as is often the case, the British have given us a lesson in democracy. They have come to an agreement and we have seen Cameron and Salmond shake hands and settling the question, which is crystal clear.” Catalonia, and Spain, would be much better off with Almunia’s Peace than with Aznar’s war.

La guerra d’Aznar i la pau d’Almunia

Aznar està molt dolgut amb les democràcies perquè parlen obertament d’Espanya com un Estat fracassat. Ho va dir Romney, ho ha repetit Obama i Merkel no es cansa de recordar que Espanya també és un Estat fracassat en economia. Per què preocupa tant Catalunya als espanyolistes quan el que han d’arreglar primer de tot és l’economia? L’únic polític espanyol amb seny viu a Brussel.les i fa anys jo demanava que Joaquín Almuniadirigís el PSOE. Segur que ara no seria un partit en plena descomposició. El vicepresident de la Comissió Europea considera que els anglesos han donat una lliçó de democràcia a Espanya amb l’acord per celebrar el 2014 el referèndum escocès per la independència.

 

“Aquesta nit han volat amb gran soroll just per sobre del terrat de casa dos caces espanyols. Ens volen fer por, com si així canviarem el vot!” Plou a bots i barrals i no podem plegar la collita d’olives així que estem a Tortosa comprant. La propietària de la botiga tan ben posada explica a una senyora gran i a la meva dona suissa Règula que està molt indignada perquè els militars ja preparen l’ocupació de Catalunya amb pràctiques de bombardeig de civils desarmats. Els polítics espanyolistes volen impedir com sigui un vot català per la independència. Curiosa campanya per les eleccions del 25 de novembre al Parlament de Catalunya que fa el PP, basada en la pura amenaça. Rajoy ho fa amb ironia (és un dir), però el seu amo Aznar ja ha declarat la guerra a Catalunya: “Cataluña no podrá permanecer unida si no permanece española. Romper con la Constitución española es la puerta de salida de Europa. El problema no es solo con España, es con el Estado de derecho. Hay que reformar nuestro modelo para rechazar los chantajes, las imposiciones y las maniobras de exclusión. La continuidad histórica de España depende de nosotros. Nada más alejado del supuesto fracaso histórico de España.” Aznar vol impedir que Catalunya voti i per això exigeix canviar la Constitució que sempre havia dit era intocable. De fet reconeix aixi que l’actual Constitució, en contra del que diu el PP, permet que Catalunya voti la independència. Aznar a més pensa com un racista a l’inventar-se dues races a Catalunya, els que parlen català i els que parlen castellà. Catalunya és un sol poble, bilingue, que vota partits catalans com senyalen les enquestes al Parlament on aquests arrasen amb un 90% dels diputats. Quin contrast amb Almunia: “No es honesto decir de forma tajante que Cataluña quedaría fuera de la Unión Europea si alcanzara la independencia. Los ciudadanos europeos somos todos y una vez eres ciudadano europeo tienes unos derechos. No se puede dar una respuesta tajante en decir que si alguien se segrega se queda fuera y no sabemos nada más de él por los siglos de los siglos. No es así. Cuando se lanza un debate como el que hay en Cataluña, en Flandes o en Escocia debe realizarse con todos los elementos sobre la mesa, no se puede dejar nada. En este sentido, como tantas otras veces, los británicos nos han dado una lección de democracia. Han llegado a un acuerdo y se ha visto Cameron y Salmond dándose la mano y pactando la pregunta, que es inequívoca.” Catalunya, i Espanya, viurien millor amb la pau d’Almúnia que amb la guerra d’Aznar.
