I meet up with Pla at the Zurich. We discuss Pla. No I’m not yet in Switzerland, rather at the Pla-style Bar Zurich in Barcelona’s Plaça Catalunya, rebuilt in true twenties style. Pla is not Pla either, rather the fourth Pla writer. To summarize: first, Josep Pla Casadevall, the Shakespeare of Catalonia. Second, Franco’s censor Josep Pla Comas with blue blood and a blue fascist shirt. Third, the Fascist bureaucrat of the League of Nations Jose Pla Carceles. And fourth, Xavier Pla Barbero, Josep Pla professor at the University of Girona. Even stevens: two fascist Plas and two liberal Plas.

Evildoers have always tried to pass off the two Fascist Plas as Josep Pla. I tell him that I was surprised at the St. Paul -Pla- conversion of Joaquim Nadal, after falling off his socialist horse. In 1977 he libelled Josep Pla by passing off as his an article of Girona censor Josep Pla Comas. He has never apologised for his ignoble lie. Now, with the faith of the convert to the truth of Pla, he praises not one but two liberal Plas, for the book edited by Xavier Pla «Josep Pla, Slow Living» (Destino). Pla inscribes it for me: «To my friend Verges with thanks for his interest in Pla and with the hope to read soon his important work on Pla and his great publisher.» That is, the one thousand difficult to date letters. As a foretaste I am writing: «The Invisible Censorship. Pla’s Infernal Letter and Other Papers from the Courier Facundo.» I won’t be able to enter any prize. The do-gooders of Omnium Cultural are a waste of time and the other is already taken although not awarded until Twelfth Night in 2016. We live in a rotten country with the rotten politicians we deserve. Talking of the country, El Pais (the Country) of Catalonia has inaugurated their translation online of the «global newspaper» -that speaks Catalan in the alcove like that other great Catalan lover Aznar- with a campaign against Pla, centred on a chaotic book that accuses him, without any proof, of spying for Franco. The translators of El Pais pressured Xavier Pla to join the witch-hunt of the evildoers. He did the opposite with a brave article defending Pla’s unquestionable Catalan nationalism. I ask him whether the chaotic book that accuses Pla of writing for Fascist papers in the thirties took into account that there were also two fascist Pla writers: «No and on the contrary the fascist articles are dated from Geneva (where the Fascist League of Nations bureaucrat Jose Pla lived), when Pla was a correspondent in Madrid at that time.» Nothing new. I tell him that El Pais published invented letters of the Minorcan Hernandez Mora to my father discussing Pla, signed by Arcadi Espada, the founder of the Spanish nationalist Ciudadanos. My furious 90-year old father asked me to write an article calling out the lies that was censored by the editor: «You cannot call him a liar because he is a man held with such high esteem in this house.». The Spanish nationalist truth is one big lie on Pla. Spanish nationalists would like a Pla collaborator like them –Valenti Puig spelt it out in so many words in El Pais- and they make use of the Franco praises by the two fascist Plas. The writer most censored by Franco accused of being a supporter! It is no mere coincidence that The Gray Notebook was the first book not submitted to the censorship of Franco’s Goebbels, Fraga, published the day after the Press Law of April 1966. I will not recommend «Slow Living» -as Alfons Quinta does without reading the book- until living it slowly in the Zurich snow.

El quart Pla al Zurich

Em trobo amb Pla al Zurich. Parlem de Pla. No estic a Suïssa encara, sinó al planià Bar Zurich de Plaça Catalunya a Barcelona, reconstruit fidel als anys vint. Pla no és Pla sinó el quart Pla escriptor. Repassem. Primer, Josep Pla Casadevall, el Shakespeare de Catalunya. Segon, el censor de Franco Josep Pla Comas de sang i camisa blaves. Tercer, el funcionari feixista de la Lliga de Nacions José Pla Cárceles. I quart, Xavier Pla Barbero, catedràtic Josep Pla de la Universitat de Girona. Un empat tècnic: dos Plas feixistes i dos Plas liberals.

Els malpensants sempre volen encolomar a Josep Pla els dos Plas feixistes. Li dic que m’ha sorprès la conversió paulina -planiana- de Joaquim Nadal, caigut del seu cavall socialista. El 1977 difamava Josep Pla fent passar un article del censor a Girona Josep Pla Comas. Mai s’ha excusat de la seva innoble mentida, però ara, amb la fe del convers a la veritat planiana, elogia no un sinó dos Plas liberals, pel llibre editat per Xavier Pla «Josep Pla, la vida lenta» (Destino). Pla me’l dedica: «A l’amic Vergés agraint-li l’interès planià i esperant poder llegir ben aviat la seva important obra de Pla i el seu gran editor.» Són mil cartes difícils de datar, però, per fer l’aperitiu, estic escrivint: «La censura invisible. Lletra infernal de Pla i altres papers del recader Facundo.» No el podré presentar a cap premi. Amb els benpensants d’Òmnium Cultural no val la pena ni intentar-ho i l’altre premi està donat des de fa temps, tot i que no toca fins reis del 2016. Un país podrit amb els polítics podrits que mereixem. Parlant del país, El País de Catalunya ha estrenat la seva traducció online del «periódico global» -que parla català en la intimitat com aquell gran catalanista Aznar- amb una campanya anti-Pla, centrada en un llibre caos que l’acusa, sense cap prova, d’espia de Franco. Els traductors de El País han pressionat Xavier Pla perquè s’afegís a la caça de bruixes dels malpensants. Ha fet el contrari amb un valent article defensant el catalanisme incontestable de Pla. Li pregunto si el llibre caos, que acusa Pla d’escriure per diaris feixistes als anys trenta, ha tingut mai en compte que hi havia també dos Plas feixistes escriptors: «No i, al contrari, els articles feixistes estan datats a Ginebra, (on residia el funcionari José Pla a la Lliga de Nacions), quan Pla era corresponsal a Madrid a la mateixa època.» Res de nou. Li explico que El País va publicar cartes inventades del menorquí Hernàndez Móra al meu pare parlant de Pla, signat pel fundador de l’espanyolista Ciudadanos Arcadi Espada. Indignat el meu pare, de 90 anys, em va demanar un article desmentint-lo que fou censurat pel seu director: «No pots dir que és un mentider perquè és un home molt estimat de la casa.». La veritat espanyolista és tot mentida sobre Pla. Els espanyolistes volen un Pla botifler com ells – ho deia ben clar Valentí Puig a El Pais- i fan servir els elogis a Franco dels dos Plas feixistes. L’escriptor més censurat acusat de franquista! No és casual que El Quadern Gris fou el primer llibre que no passà per la censura del Goebbels de Franco Fraga, publicat l’endemà de la Llei de Premsa, l’abril 1966. No recomanaré «La vida lenta» -com fa Alfons Quintà sense llegir- fins viure-la, lenta, a la neu de Zurich.
