Catalans Are Not Arian

When Himmler visited Montserrat in 1940 in search of the Holy Grail he saw in the museum an Iberian sepulchre with a skeleton of a very tall man and he exclaimed: “He’s Arian! Catalans are Arians!” The monk guide answered that there is no Catalan race, because Catalans are a mixture of peoples come from many parts. In stark contrast to the narrow-minded German, and Spanish, obsession with purity of blood, Catalans are a melting pot of people open to the world (See Spanish Ethnic Cleansing).

In his illuminating work “Chronicle of Catalonia” Jaume Vicens Vives defined Catalonia as a melting pot capable of blending into a single people such an heterogenous population. The Fascist General Mola wrote of the difficulties he faced naming a head of police in Barcelona who would remain true to Spanish nationalists: “Catalan particularism is something emminently contagious to the extent that it was a rare bird indeed the official who, on landing here, did not feel automatically unbound from the Central Power or felt an irresistible tendency to become assimilated to the autonomous spirit of the natural born of the land.” Catalan nationalism did not die with the Franco-Spanish military occupation of 1714. Despite continued brutal repression it always manifested itself under the varying labels of every period. Catalonia never stopped reclaiming its national freedom. In contrast to England, Spain never knew how to give way and lost its colonies by refusing them autonomy. What a contrast with Catalonia, which from the onset gave autonomy to Valencia, Majorca or Sicily, without waiting for any claims, constructing a real confederation, all with their own institutions and laws in complete equality with Catalonia. Today Spanish nationalists have been forced to accept democracy and the autonomies have revived strongly, based on the open-minded confederate model of Catalonia, not the closed-minded French Jacobin model of Madrid.

Quan Himmler visita Montserrat el 1940 en busca del Sant Grial veu en el museu un sepulcre ibèric amb l’esquelet d’un home molt alt i exclama: “És ari! Els catalans són aris!” El monjo-guia li contesta que no existeix una raça catalana, perquè els catalans són una barreja de gents vingudes de moltes parts. A diferència de la tancada obsessió alemanya, i espanyola, per la puresa de la sang, els catalans són un gresol o melting pot de gent oberta al món (Veure La neteja ètnica espanyola).

A la seva lluminosa obra “Notícia de Catalunya” Jaume Vicens Vives parla de Catalunya com a gresol, capaç de fondre en un sol poble una població tan heterogènia. El feixista general Mola parla de la dificultat de nombrar un cap de policia a Barcelona que es mantingui fidel als espanyolistes: “El particularismo catalán es algo eminentemente contagioso, al punto de que podía calificarse de rara avis la autoridad que, al tomar tierra allí, automáticamente no se sentía desligada del Poder Central o con tendencia irresistible a asimilarse el espíritu autonómico de los naturales del país.” El nacionalisme català no va morir amb l’ocupació militar franco-espanyola de 1714. Tot i la continua ferotge repressió es manifesta sempre sota les diverses nomenclatures de cada època. Catalunya mai ha deixat de reclamar la seva llibertat nacional. Espanya, a diferència d’Anglaterra, no sap cedir i ha perdut les colònies per no voler donar autonomia. Quin contrast amb Catalunya, que el primer que feia era donar autonomia a València, Mallorca o Sicília, sense esperar cap reivindicació, construint una veritable confederació, tots amb les seves pròpies institucions i legislació en plena igualtat amb Catalunya. Avui els espanyolistes no poden amb la democràcia i les autonomies reviuen amb força, basades en el model obert confederal de Catalunya, no el model tancat jacobí francès de Madrid.
