Scotland Stands Up

Democrat Cameron has ended up doing exactly the same as denialist Rajoy by boycotting the Scottish referendum. He didn’t ban the vote knowing full well, unlike Spanish nationalists, that democracy is the power of the people, not of the State. But Cameron left the no campaign in the hands of the Labour losers and refused to debate with Alex Salmond, the Scottish first minister. The suffocating control of English media is just like Madrid. London also controls the press and television, which have not budged from no to independence with the occasional sop to the yes arguments. Now that Scotland stands up to be counted, London has become extremely nervous.

The first debate between Salmond and the disastrous former Labour chancellor Darling was won by the no side according to the English media. But the television boycott meant only Scotland could view it. The BBC changed its attitude in the second debate, which was broadcast throughout the UK with a doubly catastrophic impact as everyone saw that Salmond and yes clearly won. What will happen on 18 September? Opinion polls are not to be trusted as I have said often, based on my experience of a decade of quarterly Swiss municipal, cantonal and federal referendums. The BBC has confirmed in a programme analysing brain scans that the emotional component dominates over independence. That is, the idea of belonging to a community clearly trumps economic arguments. Moreover political psychologists found that negative campaigns are counterproductive because they reinforce the yes vote. Canadian unionists were losing with their negative campaign until they dropped it for a positive “love-in” where Canadians from all over the country went to Quebec to tell francophones they were well loved. Quite the opposite of the English who continue with their threats and scaremongering. In Spain it is also unimaginable. A “love-in” of PP and PSOE supporters coming to Catalonia to say how much we are loved? Former Peruvian and rabid Spanish nationalist Vargas Llosa speaking in Catalan? The heir of Philip V the Perjurer demanding to swear to uphold the Catalan Constitutions? The Constitutional Court nullifying its shameful destruction of the Statute in 2010 that triggered the entire crisis? London is relatively negative, but Madrid is in absolute denial. Can you stop democracy? The English know you cannot. Catalans know that also. Even Madrid, without admitting it, knows it. How to explain, if not, the passage from despotism to democracy after Franco’s death? Democracy rules over the State. Spanish nationalists controlled 100% of the State, “All tied up” as Franco said, but could not prevent democracy. The Elephant King Juan Carlos never swore the Constitution of the State of Autonomies, only the Fascist Constitution where Catalonia did not exist. But the Catalans always existed and carry on existing. We have not lived three centuries respected as the Scots, rather hated and discriminated against. But we have won our respect. And we will be respected. Whoever wins, the yes on Scottish independence also paves the way for democracy in Catalonia, whatever Spain loses. 9/11 2014 recalls that three centuries after 1714 Catalans also stand up to be counted.

El demòcrata Cameron ha acabat fent com el negacionista Rajoy, boicotejant el referèndum escocès. No ho ha fet prohibint el vot, perquè sap molt bé, a diferència dels espanyolistes, que la democràcia és el poder del poble, no de l’Estat. Però Cameron ha deixat la campanya del no en mans dels laboristes perdedors i no ha volgut debatre amb Alex Salmond, el conseller en cap escocès. El control asfixiant dels mitjans anglesos recorda Madrid. Londres també controla els diaris i televisions, que no s’han mogut del no a la independència, sense més que breus escletxes als arguments del sí. Ara és l’hora, però, dels escocesos i Londres s’està posant molt nerviosa.

 

El primer debat entre Salmond i el desastrós excanceller laborista Darling, fou guanyat pel no segons els mitjans anglesos. Però el boicot televisiu feu que només Escòcia el veié. La BBC ha canviat d’actitud en el segon debat, que ha retransmès a tot el Regne Unit, amb un impacte doblement catastròfic perquè ha quedat claríssim que Salmond i el sí han guanyat per golejada. Què passarà el 18 de setembre? Les enquestes no són gens de fiar com ja he dit sovint, per la meva experiència d’una dècada de referèndums trimestrals municipals, cantonals i federals a Suïssa. La BBC ho confirma en un programa on escanejos del cervell han mesurat que el component emocional domina sobre la independència. És a dir la idea de pertànyer a una comunitat supera els arguments econòmics clarament. Els politicopsicòlegs han trobat amés que les campanyes negatives són contraproduents perquè reforcen el sí. Al Canadà els unionistes perdien amb la seva campanya negativa fins que l’abandonaren per un «love-in» positiu de canadencs de tot el país anant a Quebec per dir als francòfons que els estimaven. Tot el contrari dels anglesos que segueixen amb les amenaces i el fer por. Inimaginable també a l’Estat espanyol. Un «love-in» de peperos i psoeistes anant a Catalunya a dir-nos que ens estimen? L’experuà i rabiós espanyolista Vargas Llosa parlant en català? L’hereu de Felip V el Perjur reclamant jurar les Constitucions Catalanes? El Tribunal Constitucional anul.lant la seva vergonyosa estripada de l’Estatut de 2010 que ha desencadenat tota la crisi? Londres és relativament negativa, però Madrid és el negacionisme absolut. Es pot parar la democràcia? Els anglesos saben que no. Els catalans sabem que no. Fins i tot Madrid, sense admetre-ho, sap que no. Com, si no, el pas del despotisme a la democràcia després de la mort de Franco? La democràcia mana sobre l’Estat. Els espanyolistes que controlaven el 100% de l’Estat, «atado y bien atado,» no pogueren impedir la democràcia. El rei elefant Joan Carles mai va jurar la Constitució de l’Estat de les Autonomies, només la feixista Principios del Movimiento on Catalunya no existia. Però els catalans existíem i seguim existint. No hem viscut tres segles respectats com els escocesos, sinó discriminats i odiats. Però ens hem fet respectar. I ens farem respectar. Guanyi qui guanyi, el sí a la independència d’Escòcia també marca pas a la democràcia de Catalunya, perdi qui perdi Espanya. L’11 de setembre 2014 recorda que tres segles després de 1714 també ara és l’hora catalans.
